Designers in the United States are being offered $500,000 by its government to improve face masks.
The so-called Mask Innovation Challenge — available to Americans only — aims to solve issues like glasses steaming up, uncomfortable straps and skin irritation.
The competition also wants more scientific evidence on how effective face coverings are in protecting people when social distancing isn't possible.
Ideas must be submitted by April 21st to come under consideration for the prize.
Nikki Bratcher-Bowman, acting assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the US Department of Health and Human Services, said: “We know that properly and consistently worn face masks help reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory infections, but many people are reluctant to wear them for a variety of reasons."
She added: “With this mask challenge, we want to get people across the country involved in developing new masks that are both effective and comfortable. This will help us control COVID-19 and be better prepared for future public health emergencies.”
