Diverted flights arrive in Cork and Shannon

The first diverted flights have begun arriving at Cork and Shannon airports after the risk from volcanic ash forced the closure of airspace over the northern half of the country.

Further flight cancellations are likely later in the day as the ash cloud moves further south over the country.

All intending passengers are being advised to check with their airlines before leaving home as the uncertainty continues.

Buses are waiting to bring passengers to their final destination. Five flights are due to divert here - others to Shannon, before it has to shut down.

As of now, Dublin, Knock, Galway, Donegal and Sligo airports are closed.

Operations in Waterford will be restricted from 3pm, Shannon from 5pm.

There is no indication yet of when the restrictions will be lifted. Aviation officials are set to issue an update on the situation at 4pm.
