The Tanaiste, Mary Harney, has urged politicians to avoid making racist comments during the general election campaign.

Ms Harney said public representatives have a duty to avoid inflammatory language and she described much of the current debate on racism as irresponsible.

"Our history has shown that very often we’re uncomfortable with difference and I think people need reassurance and they need to be informed and educated and that’s why it’s the job of politicians that the public are given the leadership that’s required on this issue", she said.
