Labour: M3 must be re-routed away from Hill of Tara

The Labour Party has called on Minister for the Environment Dick Roche not to approve the proposed route of the M3 motorway in Co Meath.

The Labour Party has called on Minister for the Environment Dick Roche not to approve the proposed route of the M3 motorway in Co Meath.

Reports this morning claimed the minister intended to allow the road to be built through the landscape surrounding the Hill of Tara, the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland.

Mr Roche has denied that any decision has been made.

Commenting on the matter, Labour TD Eamon Gilmore said there were alternative routes for the road that would not destroy "the heritage of Tara".

"I'm calling on Minister Roche not to permit this motorway to go through the Tara-Skryne valley and for the National Roads Authority to look again at the alternatives that are still open to them," he said.
