A series of pipe bomb attacks damaged homes in the North during the night.

The first devices exploded, damaging the front doors of two flats in the Rathcoole Drive area of Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, on the outskirts of north Belfast.

The flats were understood to have been vacant and there were no reports of any injuries.

A few hours later, a device exploded at a ground-floor flat in Carnbrook Drive, Antrim. Two men in the property escaped injury but a bedroom was damaged.

Meanwhile, a man suffered minor burns and the effects of smoke inhalation after an arson attack on a flat in Bangor, Co Down.

The living room window of the first-floor property was smashed and petrol poured in and set alight, said police.

Two men were reported to have been seen outside the flat at the time of the attack and police have appealed for any witnesses to their activities to contact them.

In separate violence, two men were shot in the legs in Newtownards, Co Down.

They were walking along Ballyreagh Road in the town when they were approached by three men and each shot in the leg.

Both men were being treated in hospital for their injuries, which were not believed to be serious.

Police said they did not know the motive behind the shootings.
