FA Cup: Hoddle hanging on Campbell fitness

Glenn Hoddle admits he will have to take a major fitness gamble on at least two key players for Tottenham's FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

Glenn Hoddle admits he will have to take a major fitness gamble on at least two key players for Tottenham's FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

The biggest concern is Spurs' captain Sol Campbell, who has not trained this week and is understood to be having a fresh scan on his ankle injury on Friday.

He is rated as only a 50-50 chance with a ligament strain to the ankle, but a final decision will be left until the last possible minute.

The good news is that striker Sergei Rebrov is fit, while defender Stephen Carr also insists he is ready to play despite not having started a game since December 27 due to a groin problem.

Simon Davies also trained on Thursday, while Ledley King underwent a light session and Stephen Clemence received treatment but is expected to train on Friday.

Tim Sherwood and Oyvind Leonhardsen, just like Carr, have also trained this week but last started a game on March 3 and February 17 respectively.

Hoddle said: "It's a decision whether we start with them with a view to taking them off or the other way around.

"It's a very difficult decision that's got to be made and a late decision as well. I'll give these players as much time as I possibly can, even if it was late Saturday night.

"They lack fitness but in a game like that, your adrenalin gets you through a lot and an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal will balance that out.

"Whatever happens, it will be a gamble on about two or three of those players"

Campbell's fitness is the most important and he, just like Rebrov, Carr, Clemence, Sherwood, Leonhardsen and King, missed last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Highbury following an ankle injury on England duty.

Even reserve keeper Ian Walker has had a stomach upset for two days this week and Hoddle was rather under-playing the difficulties of his first week in charge as he admitted the injury problems had made life "awkward".

He added: "It would be vastly important to have Sol fit, especially with the way that their team are with Thierry Henry's pace and power, and with the presence that Sol gives us in his play and his quality. "
