Juan Sebastian Veron has been defended by Sir Alex Ferguson following a lacklustre start to his Manchester United career.
Veron has come under fire for failing to live up to his £28.1m (€45.3m) pricetag as Britain’s most expensive player.
All too often the Argentinian international has been anonymous in United’s big games this season, although he arguably had his best match for the Red Devils against Liverpool last night.
Ferguson dismissed this criticism and he feels Veron has received flak simply because he plays for United.
‘‘Seba has had his share of critics,’’ said Ferguson in the official United magazine.
‘‘Every one of the players has had their share of criticism and that’s all because we’re Manchester United. That’s the only reason.
‘‘But Seba has been fantastic. The one thing about Seba Veron is that he is always positive and I think it’s great to have a player with the courage to do that.
‘‘It’s great to see a player with such belief in himself. There’s not one negative part to him.
‘‘When he took the ball against Bayern Munich in the first minute of our recent Champions League game, he took it outside his own box, shielded it, put his body against the player and held it there, right on the edge of the box.
‘‘I said ‘for Christ’s sake, Seba, not there!’ But he has that great belief and it’s great to see that.’’
