The Cabinet is expected to discuss the controversial Stadium Ireland issue later today.

Yesterday, the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, insisted that the project will go ahead and denied any disagreement with the Progressive Democrats over the matter.

However, Tanaiste Mary Harney said her party believes funding for the health service should be a priority.

Reports yesterday suggested that Mr Ahern may be prepared to suggest an increase in private sector involvement in the stadium to reduce the burden on the public finances.

It is still unclear if the PDs are willing to support a project which could cost up to €1bn at a time when cutbacks are being implemented across all Government departments.
