Climate change solutions available now: Sargent

Green Party leader Trevor Sargent TD said today that solutions to climate change exist and that Ireland must start implementing them immediately.

Speaking at a photocall in Dublin city centre as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) prepares to publish its third report on mitigating the effects of rising carbon emissions, Deputy Sargent said: "If we are serious about reducing our greenhouse gas emission then there is no shortage of opportunities to do so. We have the solutions, all that is lacking, as Al Gore has pointed out, is the political will.

"Climate change is the biggest issue now facing mankind, yet our responses to date at a national level have been completely inadequate.

"There is a whole range of ways in which we can cut emissions. Today we are setting out some simple examples which would achieve significant and real cuts. There are thousands of other changes which can be made once we start planning for a new low-carbon future.

"People can do their own bit at home but a Green Government will make it easier by investing in new, cleaner technologies and setting regulations which promote greater energy efficiency.

"Such solutions will also help the economy by cutting back on our ever-increasing energy bill and by promoting businesses that can provide the new green products that the world now wants," concluded Deputy Sargent.
