One thousand jobs world-wide, are to be axed by the Elan pharmaceutical company.

It is believed that up to 300 jobs, at the troubled company’s plants in Athlone and Dublin, will be lost.

Staff will not find out how many jobs are to go in Ireland, until later this afternoon.

Fine Gael TD for Longford, Roscommon, Denis Naughton, believes the Government must act now to attract new business to the area:

"The Tanaiste must immediately meet with the company," he said.

"She must also ensure that the IDA would immediately try to attract a new pharmaceutical company to the town of Athlone.

"Athlone has had significant blows over the last few months in relation to job losses," he added.
