Biggs' mobility scooter vandalised
British Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has become a victim of crime after his mobility scooter was vandalised, it was reported today.
Biggs, 80, who was released from prison on medical grounds last year now lives in a care home in Barnet, north London.
The Daily Mail reported police are investigating after the four-wheeled vehicle, which had been parked outside the home, had an arm ripped off and its front basket torn away.
A friend of Biggs told the paper: “It was just meaningless vandalism. Ronnie is pretty upset because he was hoping to start using it again soon.
“He also thinks it is a sad state of affairs when yobs destroy an old person’s only means of getting out and about. He feels such people lack respect these days.”
Biggs, originally from Lambeth, south London, was a member of a 15-strong gang which attacked the Glasgow to London mail train at Ledburn, Bucks, on August 8 1963 before making off with £2.6m.
He was given a 30-year sentence but escaped from Wandsworth prison, south London, in a furniture van after spending 15 months in jail.
He was on the run for more than 30 years, living in Spain, Australia and Brazil, before returning to the UK voluntarily in 2001.
