Moravcik: Celtic need new Lennon

Former Celtic midfielder Lubomir Moravcik believes Celtic can go even further in the Champions League – if they can find a replacement for Neil Lennon.

Former Celtic midfielder Lubomir Moravcik believes Celtic can go even further in the Champions League – if they can find a replacement for Neil Lennon.

Moravcik feels his former team-mate’s influence will be missed on and off the park after the skipper announced he was leaving at the end of this season.

The Slovak claims a replacement for Lennon is the priority in the summer transfer rush and could be the key to their European chances.

The former Czechoslovakia international claims Celtic are not far off the top teams in Europe.

The Hoops qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time this season before going out to a single goal in 210 minutes of action against AC Milan.

Only one team from outside Spain, Italy and England has competed in the semi-finals in the past three seasons – PSV Eindhoven – but Moravcik feels Celtic’s spirit could drive them into the same group as the big-money clubs.

He said: “Money now in football is very important. Without some level of budget you can’t win anything.

“Celtic are not in the top level but are still a good team. If you have good spirit, good teamwork, good management, you can beat the best.

“We saw against Milan a penalty could have changed everything. It’s not just about money.

“Between Celtic and AC Milan there is not a big difference, it was one goal in extra time.

“Celtic have got potential. It’s a big club with a fantastic stadium with the fans behind them.

“They must replace Lennon as a man and as a player because he was the leader of the group. If Celtic have a good transfer policy, they can be successful again.

“He works for the rest of the team, but nobody is irreplaceable.”

Moravcik agreed that Stephen McManus could play a big role in bringing the dressing-room together.

He also feels Evander Sno can play an important part in central midfield in years to come, but should not be burdened with filling Lennon’s boots.

He said: “Sno has promise for the future, he is very young. he is a tall guy and a strong guy for 19. But you need big experience to be leader of the group.

“He has got potential as a player but he is not yet ready to replace Lennon.”
