Phoenix Tower’s possible run in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket next Saturday is in doubt after the Henry Cecil inmate banged a tendon.

The four-year-old has finished second four times in Group One company already this season, most recently going down by just three quarters of a length to Duke Of Marmalade in the Juddmonte International.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned colt faces a crucial scan on Monday to determine whether he will bid to break his duck at the highest level next weekend.

“He will be having the scan on Monday,” said the owner’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe.

“Once we know the results, we will release a full statement on what the plans are.”
