Derry dreaming of UEFA Cup glory

Derry chief executive Jim Roddy says the club are dreaming of blazing a trail into the UEFA Cup group stages as they prepare for arguably the biggest game in their history.

The eircom League Premier Division side face Paris St Germain in the French capital on Thursday night on level terms after a goalless draw in the first leg.

An unlikely victory or a score draw will guarantee them four more games in the competition, and Roddy admits it would be a huge achievement for the club.

He said: “Even getting to this stage has meant an awful lot, it reflects well on the whole city. It’s just fantastic.

“Every Irish club that plays in Europe are dreaming that they can get into the group stages of the Champions League or the UEFA Cup, and if we are the first to do it it will mean an awful lot.

“Being the first to do anything is a great achievement, and someone has got to do it at some stage.”

City’s only injury doubt surrounds Sean Hargan, who suffered a groin strain in the Candystripes’ league clash with Shelbourne last Friday.

Shels came close to reaching the group stages of the Champions League when losing out over two legs to Deportivo La Coruna in August 2004, and Derry now have an ideal chance to eclipse them.

“We’re all looking forward to it,” Roddy added.

“It’s a very big occasion for the club and the city itself. We were very honoured last night to have an ambassador’s reception hosted by the Irish embassy here in Paris, so all in all it’s going to be a very big occasion.”

PSG’s preparations for the game have been affected by the indefinite suspension of France midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo.

The former Lyon and AC Milan star has had a bust-up with PSG boss Guy Lacombe, but Roddy is adamant that any turmoil in the Parisian ranks will not help his team one inch.

“It won’t help us at all,” he added.

“At the end of the day they’re a top-class football club, these things happen all the time at that level and I don’t think it will carry any part in (manager) Stephen (Kenny)’s preparations for the game whatsoever.”
