Liverpool have cancelled the contract of defender Abel Xavier by mutual consent.

The Portugal international, signed from Everton two years ago, had 18 months left on his deal but both parties agreed to terminate the contract now.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry told the club’s official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: “It was a mutual amicable decision for Abel to leave the club.”
