A Dail committee inquiry into the death of John Carthy at Abbeylara Co Longford last year has got underway.

A Dail committee inquiry into the death of John Carthy at Abbeylara Co Longford last year has got underway.

Sean Ardagh TD, chairman of the seven member committee, has outlined the background to the inquiry and its terms of reference.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties is seeking the right for an audience to the inquiry.

Joe Higgins, Socialist Party TD, will also be present.

He has been particularly critical of the FBI's role in training the Garda unit involved in the operation.

The Garda commissioner will be the first official witness to be called on Thursday.

The committee has received a total of 21 submissions.
