England’s Brian Davis was among those who booked their places at this year’s Open Championship in the American leg of International Final Qualifying in Plano, Texas.
The top eight players after 36 holes earned a spot at Muirfield this summer and Davis grabbed a share of fourth place on five under par, alongside American Scott Brown, with rounds of 66 and 69.
The pair finished two strokes behind Josh Teater and one back of another American, Johnson Wagner, and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas, who all sealed their placed at the Open, with a group of four players going into a play-off for the final three spots.
Davis was one over after 10 holes of his first round but a run of six birdies saw him soar up the leaderboard before a bogey on his penultimate hole dropped him back to four under.
In his second round Davis carded two bogeys against three birdies, including one on the 18th which kept him out the play-off.
In the play-off, Colombia's Andres Echavarria was the odd man out as Americans Bud Cauley and Luke Guthrie progressed along with Sweden's Robert Karlsson.
Echavarria was the only man to bogey the first play-off hole, sending the other three through.
