Soccer: Fans against Eircom Park

A poll of fans shows that more than half want the national stadium to be the home of Irish soccer.

A poll of fans shows that more than half want the national stadium to be the home of Irish soccer.

The FAI's £130 million proposed stadium came in third behind Croke Park.

The poll comes as representatives of all the National League clubs prepare to attend an emergency Eircom Park meeting in Dublin this evening.

From almost 5000 responses to the poll on A2Zsoccer.com, it emerged that 51% of soccer fans are in favour of the government's plans for a national stadium, with less than a quarter plumping for Eircom Park.

Several of the national league clubs are also taking a strong stand against the proposed stadium and are urging the FAI to join forces with the Government in the new national stadium.

Under the current FAI plan, Davy Hickey Properties would be earning money from Eircom Park for the next 50 years, and that has proven a major turn-off for those at grass roots level of the game.
