Two powerful explosions derailed a train today in the violence-plagued southern Russian province of Dagestan, but no one was hurt, officials said.

Transport police spokesman Akhmed Magomayev said the blasts, equivalent to five kilograms of TNT, occurred early today near the town of Izberbash.

He said the explosions “continued the pattern” of terrorist attacks that included the November bombing of a high-speed train that killed 26 people near St Petersburg.

Twin suicide bomb attacks killed 40 people and wounded almost 100 rush hour commuters on the Moscow metro on Monday, and two more explosions killed 12 in the Dagestan town of Kizlyar on Wednesday.

The attacks sent shockwaves across Russia, and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin vowed to “drag out of the sewer” the terrorists who plotted the bombings.
