Brian Kerr praised his “magnificent” makeshift Republic of Ireland team after they signed off for the season with an impressive 1-0 victory over Holland in the Amsterdam Stadium tonight.

Tottenham striker Robbie Keane scored the stunning winner after 45 minutes when he fired home from 20 yards – taking his international tally to 20, one short of Niall Quinn’s all-time record.

“Every player was magnificent,” said satisfied coach Kerr.

“Their work rate was extraordinary given that it was the end of a long season and a long two weeks.

“We had respect for Holland but played with no fear. We showed great discipline, confidence and passed the ball well.”

Ireland came to Holland with just 20 players for what was their fourth game in 10 days and they fielded several inexperienced players, but they did not let down their country.

“We have talked about the players who are not here but many players grew up tonight,” said Kerr.

“When you look at our midfield there were very few caps between Graham Barrett, Alan Quinn and Andy Reid.

“I think it was easy for them to be up for it, however. It was a fantastic setting against a brilliant team and everyone was inspired by the occasion; we were well organised and disciplined.

“The younger players in the squad have done themselves no harm at all in this run of games. The likes of Alan Maybury, Barrett, Quinn, Reid and Alan Lee are all bonuses. We used 25 of the 26 players who gathered together two weeks ago and won three of the four matches, and this was a lovely way to finish.

“My only complaint tonight would be that we didn’t take enough of our chances, but I am satisfied overall and it has been a good two weeks work for everyone.”

Kerr praised Keane for his goal which took him within one of equalling former striker Quinn’s record, and also hailed Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given whose world class save from a Roy Makaay header in the second half kept Ireland’s lead intact.

He added: “Robbie scored a fantastic goal and he was great. The two front players were excellent, they worked hard and used possession well and we created a lot of chances.

“As for Shay, that header looked like it had to go in because he was diving the way of the cross and the ball went back across him, so it was a fantastic save.”
