At least 23 people have been killed in a series of car bombings near Chechnya, which authorities called terrorist acts by rebels.

But rebel leaders have denied involvement.

Police have appealed to Russians to report any unattended bags or suspicious objects spotted in public places.

An investigation into the blasts led police to a car parked in a neighbourhood of summer cottages near the southern town of Cherkessk, Russian news reports said.

A sapper robot was sent to check the vehicle for explosives, but after an hours-long operation no bomb was found, the Interfax news agency reported.

Meanwhile, a bomb was found under a bench near a house in the Black Sea resort of Sochi and successfully defused, ITAR-Tass reported.

Investigators said it appeared to be an attempt at a criminal settling of accounts, rather than terrorism, because the bomb was planted in a relatively quiet street.

Another car bomb blew up in Moscow, injuring a child and one adult, Moscow city police said. No details or possible motive were given.
