The jury in the trial of a Dublin man charged with the murder of a Garda in the course of his duties has begun its deliberations.

Daniel O'Toole of Cashel Avenue, Crumlin, is charged with capital murder, murder and arson.

He faces an automatic 40-year sentence if convicted of the murder of Garda Sergeant Andrew Callanan.

The defendant has denied the charges and claims he was trying to commit suicide on the night of July 21, 1999, when he entered Tallaght Garda Station with two canisters of petrol and flares. Sgt Callanan died in the resulting blaze.

O'Toole has instead pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The judge has told the jury that manslaughter is the minimum verdict.
