Ulster unionist leader David Trimble tonight described terrorist attacks on

the World Trade Centre in New York, The Pentagon in Washington DC and

Pittsburgh as ‘‘utterly appalling’’.

He said: ‘‘The thoughts and prayers of everyone in Northern Ireland are

with the injured and the bereaved.

‘‘I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the American government

and the American people.’’

A flight to Washington today containing an Ulster unionist delegation led

by Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson was returning to London in the wake of

the attacks, a party spokesman also confirmed.
