A lorry driver has been charged after 46 illegal immigrants were found in the back of a truck in a village near Salisbury.

Erich Langer, aged 47, is to appear before magistrates after police stopped a lorry carrying Tamil men, women and youths.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the German lorry driver has been charged with facilitating the group's illegal entry into the UK.

Their route is believed to have been by ferry via Portsmouth, from France or Italy.

The immigrants, some of whom have been treated for dehydration, have been found accommodation by the Immigration Service in Hampshire.
