Elton John has helped raise US$2.5m (€1.57M) for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with a concert in New York.

Former president Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea joined the former first lady for the gig at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

The event, 'Elton and Hillary: One Night Only', was his first public solo concert in New York City without his band since October 2000.

The 61-year-old English singer, composer and pianist told the crowd: “I’ve always been a Hillary supporter. There is no one more qualified to lead America.

“I’m amazed by the misogynistic attitudes of some of the people in this country. And I say to hell with them... I love you Hillary, I’ll be there for you.”
