Liverpool have confirmed they are in talks with Feyenoord over the signing of goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
The Reds now face a race against time to sign the Poland international with Friday's Champions League deadline looming.
A Liverpool spokesman confirmed to the club's official website: "We are in discussions with Feyenoord about the player."
Dudek, 28, would require a work permit as a non-EC player.
The news will come as a shock to present Liverpool number one Sander Westerveld, who started the season so well with a marvellous display against Manchester United in the Charity Shield.
His high-profile last-minute gaffe against Bolton though, will only have increased Gerard Houllier's determination to put pressure on the Dutchman's place in the team.
The Reds only have former Leicester veteran Pegguy Arphexad as back-up, but Westerveld has already showed his determination not to surrender his place.
He said on Tuesday: "It is not nice that I make a blunder like that when everybody is talking about Dudek, but things like that just happen.
"However bad it might look, I am not scared of losing my spot in the team."
Dudek is currently in Warsaw preparing for Poland's World Cup qualifier against Norway on Saturday.
