Leinster's O'Connor pleased with opening performance

New Leinster coach Matt O’Connor was quite pleased with his side’s focus on the first round of the Rabo Direct Pro 12.

After not winning a single game in pre-season, the defending champions came from being behind at one stage to beating the Scarlets 19-42 away.

Aside from the usual bumps and bruises there are no major concerns from the medical team arising from Friday's game. Luke Fitzgerald felt tightness in his groin during the second half of the win over the Scarlets and was withdrawn as a precaution. Tight-head prop Martin Moore, the opening try scorer in the win, received treatment for a cut on his nose which required stitches.

O’Connor is confident of having both men fully fit by the time he names his team on Friday.

“Luke is fine, he’s got a bit of a tight groin and he is going to be doing a little bit of running with the strength and conditioning staff. He added “ I think the problem is that he hadn’t played an awful lot of rugby until now and his groin was a little tight after half time but he’s presented himself alright today.”

On last Friday’s game itself, O’Connor was left impressed at their second half showing after going in at half time six points down.

“It’s pleasing in the sense that everyone’s focus in pre-season is game one, to play away from home and to get such a resounding win was pleasing but it’s important that the guy’s aren’t getting too far ahead of themselves and they are well aware of the challenge Ospreys pose this week.”

Michael Bent who is still suffering with a neck injury is still out, while Quinn Roux rolled his ankle in training and is a doubt for Saturday's game.

There were debuts for three players in Wales; St. Mary's College winger Darragh Fanning, out-half Jimmy Gopperth who scored 22 points and Ireland second row Mike McCarthy.

“A couple of guys should stick their heads up for selection and we will look to keep last week’s team settled, it was a great result for us and we will be looking to take those combinations into Ospreys as they are a quality outfit.”

“We also need to make sure we get the benefit out of the game time those guys had at the weekend” O’Connor added.

Speaking of Ospreys, they themselves had quite an impressive opening league game. They went to Italy and beat Treviso 24-19 and will arrive to Dublin looking to upset the champions.

“Treviso are a quality outfit and are well coached by Franco Smith.” “The have performed very well in recent times both in Europe and in the League as well, that said it was a good result for Ospreys they approached it pretty well and were good enough to get the result.”

In our season previews, we picked out Jimmy Gopperth as one of the players to watch, as has already been mentioned, he racked up 22 points in his first league game and with Fergus

McFadden seeking the number 10 jersey, it should make for a very good rivalry for the position.

“Jimmy is a good pro, he manages the game very well – He kicks his goals and late on created a lot of opportunities for us.” O’Connor added “Ian (Madigan) is not under any illusions that he needs to keep getting better and I’m sure the pair of them will play a lot of rugby for us in the 10 shirt.”
