Soccer: PSV play down van Nistelrooy transfer talk

PSV Eindhoven are trying to play down talk Ruud van Nistelrooy could soon be joining Manchester United.

Van Nistelrooy returned from injury to score twice for the reserves last night and is in the PSV first-team squad for the match with Roda JC.

The striker was due to sign for United in an £18.5m deal last April but his club insist his priority is to start playing again rather than dreaming about a move to Old Trafford.

The original deal collapsed when the striker failed a medical on his knee and then suffered a cruciate ligament injury just days later.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has always maintained he still wants to sign the 24-year-old and has monitored every step of his recovery.

But PSV spokesman Pedro Salazar Hewitt said: "Everything is going well and he could play some minutes for the first team tomorrow.

"The first thing is for him to get fit playing for PSV and not think about a transfer to United or any other club.

"This has always been his number one priority, and he must concentrate on his rehabilitation.

"He needs to play matches to get back to his best form before anyone can talk about a transfer.

"That is not the case at the moment, and he is just coming back."

Despite PSV's attempts to talk down a transfer to United, a renewed bid by the Reds looks inevitable.

Ferguson still wants van Nistelrooy and the player remains keen to come to Old Trafford.
