The Army Bomb Disposal Unit have made safe a viable device in Dublin.

The device was found in the front garden of a house in Cranog Close, Ballymun having failed to detonate.

The Gardaí called in the Army Bomb Disposal Team who arrived on the scene at 10.15am.

Following an examination of the device it was decided that it should be removed for further examination.

The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 11am.

Commandant Gavin Young of the Defence Forces Press Office says the situation was serious,

He said: "It was a viable improvised explosive device which failed to detonate in Ballymun this morning. These are all homemade they're all potentially dangerous and they're certainly unstable so the right thing was done when we were called.

"We were on scene at 10.15am and we were cleared it out by 11.00am. On further examination back in the barracks the device was deemed to be viable."
