Surgeon expects congresswoman recovery

The neurosurgeon treating Representative Gabrielle Giffords says doctors are “actually confident” she’s making progress in her recovery.

The neurosurgeon treating Representative Gabrielle Giffords says doctors are “actually confident” she’s making progress in her recovery.

Dr Michael Lemole said her eyes are opening more frequently and she can carry out more complex sequences of activity in response to commands and on her own.

He says doctors couldn’t have hoped for better improvement, given the severity of her wound.

The congresswoman was shot in the head on Saturday in an attack in Tucson that wounded 12 others and killed six people, including US District Judge John Roll, whose funeral was today.

Giffords’ husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, posted a message on Twitter today thanking people for the messages of support and said “GG,” as he referred to her, was “improving each day”.
