Harney: One rule should apply to all AIB workers

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has reiterated her view that any AIB executives suspected of wrongdoing should face the full rigours of the law.

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has reiterated her view that any AIB executives suspected of wrongdoing should face the full rigours of the law.

The AIB admitted last week that several of its former executives had breached tax laws by investing in an offshore firm, while an investigation had also uncovered “tax issues” relating to other former and serving executives.

Asked today why the Gardaí were not investigating the matter, Ms Harney said she believed everybody should be treated equally under the law.

“If a junior official at the bank had taken €2,000 out of the till, the full rigours of the law would apply to them,” she said.

“We can’t have one rule for one group of employees in an organisation and different rules for others.”
