Knock airport has been forced to close this afternoon due to what the airport is calling "adverse weather conditions".

Five flights have been cancelled due to the closure.

The flights affected are from London, the East Midlands and Liverpool in the UK.

The closures comes as the cold snap continues to cause transport havoc countrywide, with the west and the northwest bearing the brunt of the bad weather.

Motorists are being warned further wintry showers tonight will leave the roads in a treacherous condition.

Met Éreann is forecasting a further 5cm of snow for parts of Connaught and Ulster with tonight's temperatures dipping well below zero.

Councils around the country are to face a multi-million euro clean-up bill once the ice and snow clears.

The surfaces on many untreated secondary and minor roads will have been damaged by the bad weather, some of which had only been repaired after November's floods.

The repair work will be compounded by cutbacks in funding to local councils.
