A man was arrested in the North this evening by police investigating a fatal fire.

A 28-year-old man died in the blaze at a house in Lisburn, Co Antrim, soon after dawn.

The man being questioned is understood to have escaped from the burning house on Stoneyford Road.

Police have not named the victim, who was a labourer.

The fire is believed to have started in the living room and according to the fire service, was so intense that it reduced everything in the room to ash.

The alarm was raised at around 5am.

Assistant Divisional Officer Isaac King said the house was well alight when crews arrived: ‘‘Breathing apparatus teams were committed for a rescue and gained access but they could not go up the stairs because they were no longer in existence.

‘‘They had to go onto a flat roof via a ladder and gain access into the back bedroom, where they did find the casualty.’’
