Indian nationals who arrived in Ireland illegally over the weekend have now applied for asylum.

The 25 men, who were travelling from Russia to Cuba are now being interviewed by immigration officials in Limerick jail.

They were brought there after refusing to re-board the Aeroflot flight as it resumed its journey following a stopover in Shannon.

It is not yet clear if they will remain in the prison for the foreseeable future. Under the Refugee Act, they may be detained there.
