Man killed in shooting in Dublin’s north inner city

A man has died after being shot in the head in a gangland-style attack near the Mater Hospital in Dublin's north inner city this morning.

A man has died after being shot in the head in a gangland-style attack near the Mater Hospital in Dublin's north inner city this morning.

The victim is believed to be a well-known criminal in his 20s who had just been released from nearby Mountjoy Prison on compassionate leave.

He was shot at least three times by a lone gunman who approached him on foot at the junction of St Vincent's Street North and Berkeley Road shortly before 10am and then calmly walked away.

Medical staff from the Mater rushed to the scene to provide him with emergency treatment, but he died from his injuries a short time later.

The location of the shooting has been sealed off pending technical examination.
