Deputy Adams made the comments at a fundraising function in New York, referring to an Old IRA raid on the offices of the Irish independent.

During the five-star dinner event in New York, Gerry Adams joked about a gun being placed to the head of the editor of the Irish Independent by IRA men under the orders of Michael Collins during the War of Independence. He later repeated the comments on his official blog.

The remarks - which were used to hit out at media scrutiny of his handling of Mairia Cahill's sex abuse allegations - have been criticised by journalism unions around the world.

Speaking at a business event in Dublin last night, the chairman of Independent News & Media Leslie Buckley said: "At best, his comments were careless; at worst they were insidious."

Mr Buckley has urged Gerry Adams to reflect on what he said and retract his comments.
