McDowell sets up committee to look into pre-nuptial law

The Government is to look at the law surrounding pre-nuptial agreements.

The Government is to look at the law surrounding pre-nuptial agreements.

A committee appointed by Minister for Justice Michael McDowell will look at the issue over the coming months.

Since the divorce referendum in 1996 large numbers of Irish men have found themselves handing over their assets where marriages have broken down.

At present, pre-nuptial agreements are not recognised by Irish courts and this has led to growing numbers of complaints about the fairness of decisions reached in family law cases.

Tomorrow night Fine Gael senator Feargal Brown plans to introduce a bill in the Seanaid looking at this issue.

However the Minister for Justice has moved today and is to appoint a committee to look at the problem in particular changes in family life since 1996 and a report is expected after Christmas.
