Déise’s Dan struggling with compulsory helmet decision
Former Hurler of the Year Dan Shanahan of Waterford has hit out at the GAA’s decision to force all hurlers to wear helmets.
Speaking at the launch of a sponsorship deal between telecommunications company 3 and Waterford GAA, Shanahan said: "I’m not a big fan of it (the helmet) at the moment.
"I’ve tried to wear it while doing the gym work and so on, and I see the GAA’s point, but I never wore a helmet in my life.
"Not being critical of the GAA, I don’t see why they should tell me I have to wear a helmet after 13 years of service to the county.
"It might be different for lads who have worn helmets and taken them off, but I’m finding it very hard at the moment.
"I wore it for the first time when myself, Eoin Murphy and Seamus Prendergast went for a puck-around on the astroturf in Tallow.
"I didn’t find it too bad but I had to wear a medium so it wouldn’t be moving around on me on my head, and the thing on the chin . . . the lads say it’ll come as you wear it more often, but I don’t know."
