The Government's emergency response committee will be briefed again this morning on efforts to secure more salt and grit for the country's roads.
As temperatures continue to plummet, the country's supplies of grit and salt are running critically low.
With no let-up in the harsh weather for some days yet, it is feared some roads will have to be closed next week.
Temperatures last night fell to as low as -12C in some parts of the country, with the worst affected areas counties Monaghan, Cavan, Wicklow, Carlow and Kildare.
Motorists are being urged not to make an unnecessary journeys as conditions are dangerous.
Bus Éireann says the vast majority of its services are operating today, with some delays, while Dublin Bus says it is operating a full service on all corridors but there will be no Nitelink service tonight.
Snow is already falling along the east coast this morning. Gerald Fleming from Met Éireann said falls of up to five centimetres can be expected.
