Australian police hunting for missing British tourist Peter Falconio have reportedly been involved in a shoot-out with a man who walked into a hotel brandishing a gun.

The incident happened in a central Australian town, but police have refused to say whether it is linked to Mr Falconio's disappearance.

The 28-year-old British tourist disappeared after he and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees, were ambushed by an armed motorist on a remote road in the Northern Territory.

Ms Lees was tied up and thrown into the back of a van, but she managed to escape.

Police have found what they believe to be Mr Falconio's blood at the scene of the attack and fear that he may have been shot dead.
