Mount Merrion halting site at centre of controversy once more

It has been on the cards for nearly 30 years, but plans to build houses for the Travelling Community in Mount Merrion in Dublin are making headlines again.

The site on Mount Anville Road has been used as a council depot for years - and has been earmarked for Traveller accommodation since 1985.

But it's still facing local opposition - with one council representative reportedly saying it would end up being the most expensive traveller accommodation in the country.

"I think the subtext to what's going on is ... there are a number of councillors who do not want this particular location developed into a group housing scheme for travellers," said Martin Collins from Pavee Point Traveller's centre.

"I don't accept the argument that this is an expensive piece of land, and it will be 'the most expensive halting site in Ireland'.

"For a long number of years, it was the council depot, and I haven't heard any councillors come out and call this 'the most expensive depot in Ireland'."
