Chief constable condemns Stobie killing

Assistant Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland Alan McQuillan condemned the killing of former murder suspect William Stobie as "another dreadful murder in the run-up to Christmas".

Assistant Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland Alan McQuillan condemned the killing of former murder suspect William Stobie as "another dreadful murder in the run-up to Christmas".

Stobie was shot dead as he approached his car outside his flat in the staunchly loyalist Glencairn estate in north Belfast at around 6.15am.

‘‘It’s too early to speculate about what’s going on here or how many gunmen were involved,’’ said Mr McQuillan.

‘‘But we will be doing everything we can to investigate this and bring the people responsible to justice.’’

Stobie’s partner is understood to have been at home when the shooting occurred.

Mr McQuillan said: ‘‘She was pretty hysterical afterwards.’’

A police spokesman said that up to five shots may have been heard by neighbours.
