The HSE has said it will review the case of a woman who neglected her five children, leaving them with severe psychological difficulties.

The woman will be sentenced later this week after the court heard that her children were left dirty and underfed.

The children, aged from two to nine, did not know how to change their clothes or use the toilet and were placed into HSE care in 2007.

Speaking at a Barnardos conference in Dublin, the national director for children and family services with the HSE Gordon Jeyes said that an independent review board will look at the case to make sure lessons are learned.
