Gardaí in Limerick have arrested two men following a sword attack last night.

Two men were hospitalised after they were assaulted by a group of men using samurai swords.

It's understood the assailants entered a house near Daly's Cross and a fight broke out which then spilled onto the Dublin Road.

Two, possibly three, 4 foot long samurai swords were used in last night's attack near Daly's Cross which happened at 9.35pm.

The two victims were lying on the road when paramedics from Limerick's Ambulance Service arrived at the scene.

The men, who are in their 20s and 40s, were brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital to be treated for their injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Shortly before midday today, gardaí from Henry Street Garda Station arrested two men in Castleconnell as part of their investigation into the sword attack.

The men, who are also in their 20s and 40s, are being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

They can be held for a maximum of 12 hours.
