Snooker: Pay up or face court, Hurricane told

Former snooker star Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins was warned today he must pay to replace a smashed pub window or risk facing criminal charges.

Former snooker star Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins was warned today he must pay to replace a smashed pub window or risk facing criminal charges.

The owners of a bar in Bangor, Co Down, where plate glass was shattered after Higgins was ordered out for abusing staff said they were prepared to drop demands for court action if he meets the £480 bill.

RUC officers interviewed him following the closing time incident. No-one was hurt.

But Maureen Parkinson, secretary at the Jamaica Inn, said the management was still waiting for Higgins to pay.

She said today: "If we get the money, then that is the end of the matter. But if we don’t then, then we’ll be pressing for charges."

The front window was broken by a half bottle of whiskey after Higgins was ordered out.

Snooker’s former World Champion had been drinking earlier with friends at a nearby hotel. He arrived at the bar in a taxi late on Monday night and started shouting at staff.

At one stage he said: "Do you know who I am. I am Alex Higgins. Sir Alex Higgins to you."

Ms Parkinson added: "Fortunately they bar was emptying. Any earlier, and somebody could easily have been badly hurt.

"It's regrettable something like this should have happened. Higgins was never in this bar before and we are disappointed he hasn’t even said he was sorry."

Higgins who now lives in Lisburn, Co Antrim, was unavailable for comment today, but it is understood he told friends that his snooker pal Jimmy White would pay for the damaged window.

An RUC spokesman said: "We are not investigating any complaint of criminal damage to licensed premises in the north Down area."
