Gardaí resume McVeigh body search

Gardaí will resume digging bogland close to the border with the north as part of a new bid to find the remains of a teenager kidnapped and murdered by the IRA 28 years ago.

The latest operation marks the third attempt to locate the body of Columba McVeigh, who was aged 17 at the time he was taken captive and killed by the terrorist group.

The dig focuses on a bog near Emyvale, Co Monaghan, close to the spot where previous unsuccessful excavations were carried out for the youth’s remains.

Last week the Dublin-based Commission for the Location of Victims Remains was handed fresh information from the IRA through an intermediary.

As a result gardaí examined the bog and a decision was made to resume digging.
