Two Progressive Democrat councillors have resigned from the party in protest amid ongoing controversy surrounding over-70s medical cards.
Galway City Councillor Terry O'Flaherty and Galway County Councillor Thomas Welby informed party leader Ciaran Cannon of their decision this morning.
Councillor Welby is also calling for the immediate resignation of party colleague and Health Minister Mary Harney.
This morning's developments came just hours before a planned press conference by the Taoiseach and Ms Harney to announce changes to the decision to remove the automatic medical-card entitlement from people over the age of 70.
