Irish boxers to take on Russians

Ireland will take on Russia in two internationals at the end of this month the Irish Amateur Boxing Association have confirmed.

Both countries will meet at the National Stadium in Dublin on April 27th and in the Regional Technical College in Athlone on April 29.

The exact match-ups for the eagerly awaited double header of senior internationals in Dublin and Athlone have yet to be decided.

The Russians, who will have two boxers competing in the 60Kg Division, have named a nine man team and will also compete in the 57Kg, 64Kg, 69Kg, 75Kg, 81Kg, 91Kg and 91+Kg categories.

The Irish senior squad meanwhile, are preparing to depart for the Geebee Multi Nations in Finland which begin in Helsinki tomorrow (April 12) before concluding on April 16.

Conor Ahern (Baldoyle), Ryan Lindberg (Immaculata, Belfast), David Oliver Joyce (St Michael's Athy), Ciaran Bates (St Mary's Dublin), Aodh Carlyle (Golden Cobra), Darren Sutherland (St Saviours OBA), John Sweeney (Dungloe), and Cathal McMonagle (Holy Trinity, Belfast), will represent their country in the Finnish capitol.

The Irish squad will be under team manager Paul McMahon, coaches Billy Walsh and Zuar Antia, physio Brian O'Connell, and Thomas McGaharan (R&J) in Finland.

Meantime, the National Boy 1,2 & 3 Championships got underway at the National Stadium in Dublin today (April 11).

Boxing will commence at 3pm this afternoon. The Championships, which are featuring over 200 talented young boxers, conclude on Saturday next at the National Stadium.
