Fine Gael has called for an external investigation into what it is describing as the failure of the HSE to act on information about a former department head at Athlone IT.
Doctor Niall McElwee, who was the head of the Centre for Child and Youth Care, resigned last week after telling the college he had been convicted of a sex offence in the Netherlands in 2005.
It emerged yesterday that Gardaí had informed the Midland Health Board over three years ago of allegations of a sexual assault against him.
The Minister for Children Brendan Smith has ordered a HSE inquiry into the incident but Fine Gael Health Spokesperson Brian Hayes has said the investigation needs to be taken out of their hands.
