The Government has appointed Fianna Fáil TD Peter Power to chair the cross-party Oireachtas committee being established to discuss child protection.

The body is being set up as part of measures to improve child protection in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling on underage sex.

The other members of the committee are Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, Minister for Children Brian Lenihan, Labour Party TD Brendan Howlin and Fine Gael duo Olwyn Enright and Jim O’Keeffe.

One of the issues the Committee will examine is whether a constitutional referendum is necessary to deal with the outcome of the Supreme Court judgement.
